One of my favorite rooms to clean is the Sunrise Suite, especially in the morning when the sun streams through the east windows, casting a warm glow throughout the room. There’s a sense of peace and calm that comes not only from the colors, décor, and arrangement but most of all from the subject matter in the artwork.
The art in this room carries so much history and incredible talent! There are oil paintings, acrylics, and sand paintings nestled alongside ceramics made on the property and painted by exceptionally talented artists from Jemez Pueblo, Laguna Pueblo, and other artists from around the state. The room features slates with beautiful paintings by local artist Sharon Higgins, who created the artwork in our rooms. A dreamcatcher quietly stands guard over the bed, and there’s a cubby of books telling great stories in both English and Spanish. I’m not entirely sure what makes this room so serene and special, but I like to think it’s the collective hands that played a part in telling its story.
Being born in Albuquerque and growing up around Southwestern art, knowing the people who created it, and having friends with Indigenous heritage, I have a deep respect for the stories told through the drawings, designs, and the chosen colors. It doesn’t matter which medium was used; it all tells a story of life, people, heritage, and hope. Some pieces depict the four seasons, while others symbolize renewal in the spring, special dances, and sacred traditions.
One cannot help but feel a deep connection to the rich history shared in this room. The setting and surroundings beckon visitors to pause and soak in the culture that proudly declares honor and respect. Whether you refer to the artists as Native American, Indigenous Peoples, or simply wonderful friends we’ve met along the way—as we prefer to say—we at Redhorse B&B are deeply honored to share this beautiful artwork and the story it tells. This, we believe, is what it means to be steeped in tradition in the #LandofEnchantment!
